The Craft Behind the Image

I’m Robert Formentelli, a photographer based in Columbus, Ohio, with a passion for combining creativity, technical precision, and craftsmanship.

My photography journey began with landscapes in 2010. What started as an interest in capturing the natural world gradually developed into a deeper appreciation for light, composition, and the details that make an image distinctive. Over time, that curiosity led me to explore other forms of photography, from nature and still life to commercial imagery.

I’ve always enjoyed creating things, understanding how they work, and figuring out how to bring an idea to life. My previous career in information technology, along with creative interest such as woodworking, helped shape my appreciation for problem solving, precision, and the satisfaction of creating something with care.

Photography brings those interests together.

For me, the creative process is just as rewarding as the finished image. I enjoy developing an idea, working through the technical challenges, and seeing everything come together in the final image. Whether working with natural light or carefully controlled studio light, I appreciate how thoughtful choices can transform an ordinary subject into something distinctive.

I’m a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) through Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and continue developing my craft through photographic education and competition.

Today, my photography follows two distinct but connected paths. Proof and Plates focuses on bottle, beverage, and food photography, while Formentelli Photography reflects my creative interests through fine art photography and prints.

Both are guided by the same curiosity, creativity, and appreciation for the craft behind the image.
